CNC Foam Cutter Overview

A CNC Foam cutter is a machine that cuts blocks of foam into a variety of different shapes and sizes through the use of a computer that fully automates the process. This sometimes is referred to as a hot wire foam cutter because a hot wire is used to make the cut in a block of foam.

Usually the wire is made from stainless steel, nichrome and the wire can be very thick. The wire is heated using a process called electrical resistance which means it gets hot enough (around 200 degrees centigrade) to vaporize the foam before the wire makes contact with it. This process creates a smoother cut and produces a variety of shapes and sizes.

Depending on the length of the wire, the process will cut a shallow or deep cut. The wires have to be held in the machine under a very tight tension to keep the wire from sagging when making the cut. On many CNC foam cutting machines this wire is held vertically so that it doesn't create the problem with sagging.

These shapes are cut by the cutting wire that is attached to the machine. They will cut either polystyrene or polyurethane blocks. The types of foam that a CNC foam cutter can cut include anything that is thermofusible and expanded. What this basically means is that the foam has to be able to melt at one of the lower temperatures. Some of them include:

- Polystyrene -- these are blocks of balls that are expanded.
- Polystyrene -- this is extruded foam and comes in a variety of colors that include green, pink, purple or gray and these are usually plates that are smooth.
- Polymethacrylimide -- a very expensive material and it is rigid foam with a low density.
- Polypropylene -- which is flexible and expanded and can be a solution to protection from shock.
- Polyethylene -- these are foams that are tear resistant and flexible.

With the CNC Foam cutter you can form a more prism like or tapered shape in the block of foam. A hot-wire that is under a high tension to cut the foam. There are stepper motors that provide the precision and accuracy for the work and there are components called races that control the stiffness of tension of the wire.

Some CNC foam cutters also offer different attachments like a lathe and this allows the machine to use either preformed or stretched wire. Also the machine is able to cut a variety of shapes including spirals or blocks of ornamental structure like balusters for stairways or planters.

There are a variety of uses for foam cutters that include making signage, model airplanes, protyping, lost foam cutting and more. The CNC Foam cutter is a flexible machine and is only limited by the imagination.

Although many people prefer to purchase a CNC foam cutter there are also plans on the Internet that show how to make them inexpensively for hobbyists and others who are interested in working with foam.

3 Things to Consider When Buying Garden Furniture

I made a fatal mistake last week when I told my wife that I had been researching dining sets for my BBQ website. First of all she wanted to know exactly what I meant my a dining set and once I'd explained that I was referring to tables and chairs it was at that point that the tirade of questions such as "why don't we get some new furniture" started. For those of you men that have read "When Mars And Venus Collide" by Dr John Gray you will know how to interpret this inquisition in a manner that does not describe it as nagging, but at the end of the day we all know that it's going to end in a new set of dining furniture and a dent in the credit card!

So if you end up in the position that I find myself in then you are going to have to start the research to ensure that you buy the right set for you and to that end I thought that I would share some of my findings and save you some bother.

What Do I Need To Think About When Buying New Furniture?

If you are anything like me then the last thing you want to be doing is spending time looking after the furniture once it is outside or bringing it inside every time it rains. To be honest I could not do the latter anyway because I would not have the space so when it comes down to it, the single most important factor to consider is the construction material and relate that to the climate in which you live.

1. Construction Materials

This area can be broken down into three main materials, metal, wood and wicker. In the metal category there is Aluminum - Lightweight, doesn't rust and is pretty much indestructible, an all year round choice provided you don't live in an area susceptible to wind! Aluminum can also be cleaned by most household cleaning materials. The other metal option is Wrought Iron - Again an all year round choice. It's heavier in weight and also rust proof provided that the powder coating isn't chipped. Very robust and easily cleaned with soapy water, but do not use abrasives as this will scratch the powder coating.

When it comes to wood then it's really a choice of the type of wood. The best regarded are Pine, Cedar or Teak with teak coming out tops. This is the wood used for decks on yachts so you know it's going to be pretty hard wearing. The reason that you are looking at these particular woods is to ensure that your furniture does not warp as a result of being exposed to the sun and the rain. Wood is weather proof if treated properly so it does need regular treatment but maybe only once a year.

Wicker is the final option and this is supremely comfy but it's not as weather resistant as metal and todays wicker is really a plastic coated onto an aluminum frame. If it is comfort that you are after then go this route but you may have to accept renewing your patio dining set a little more often.

2. Size

You want the size to be in keeping with the amount of space you have available. If you're blessed with lots of space then maybe this is not such a big deal but if you are space constricted then you might want to consider a bistro style patio set.

Consider how you are going to use your furniture. Do you entertain regularly or is this patio dining set just for the family barbecue? Most sets come as five pieces (table plus four chairs) which is OK for the family but if you want the option to spread out then consider conversion sets because these will give you greater flexibility.

3. Mosaic

Mosaic table tops really do look great but these surfaces do need special care and attention. The grout around the tiles can crack in extremes of temperature so this type of furniture really does need to be housed indoors if you are expecting freezing temperatures.

Anyway, I have now take everything into consideration and if you'll excuse me I will now get on line and keep my wife happy with a new set of patio furniture and then I will light the BBQ!

Taste Shows Through with Glass Railings

There are certain spaces where glass railings really bring out the best of the surroundings. Many beautiful modern shopping malls use glass railings to expand the space and make sure the shopper has a full view. Glass railings can add a special sparkle to many other spaces as well. The reflections from the glass will emphasize an interestingly lit area and add a wonderful touch.

A beautiful example of the artistic use of glass railings is in the Dubai Gold Market. As is befitting this elegant shopping center, with its stunning use of light and gold accents, the glass used in the railings reflects off all surfaces and creates a mesmerizing effect that further illuminates the beautiful gold. No one can imagine using wooden or metal railings in such a setting; the effect would be ruined.

Glass railings are a custom item, since glass railings cannot be precut and pieced together on site. This concept works well with glass railings since they should be customized to suit the area they are going to be a part of. Every nuance of the area, most especially the lighting, should be considered when installing glass railings. The whole look should be considered so that the beauty and reflective nature of the glass is not wasted.

One of the main advantages of glass railings is that they require absolutely no maintenance. They will not attract mold and mildew, as wood railings may, and they will not degrade as many other materials may. There is no varnishing or waxing or polishing. A quick spritz with window cleaner is all they need to stay perfect all the time. Unless a panel or piece breaks, there should never be a reason to replace a section of glass railing.

Most people avoid handing glass railings very much because they think they are fragile. In fact, the glass used for this purpose is very heavy and durable. However, you will alway see parents taking their children down off glass railings because they think the railings will break and hurt the child. They are not so careful about wood railings.

Glass railings create a beautiful, open space in any area where they are used. They are frequently used in shopping malls because of the open, welcoming atmosphere they create. This invites shoppers to linger, and hopefully shop some more.

Steps in Selecting the Right Railing

A balcony or staircase is a nice addition to any spacious home. Isn't it that this is the dream of many of you who wish to have a comfortable and attractive home? It is always possible without having to spend too much so go for it.

Railings are of various types. There are just numerous designs and styles available on the market today. If you have a front porch in your house or a balcony from your room on the second level, these wonderfully designed railings are absolutely great additions.

As you will be installing the railing outdoor, the most recommended material is the wrought iron or stainless steel. These two are durable materials that can stand all types of weather and even the harshest elements. They also require very little maintenance hence, they're considered to be a good long term investment. Wood is also a classic choice but may deteriorate fast when exposed outdoors.

In selecting a railing for your balcony or front porch, consider the style of your home. Being installed outdoor, they should match or at least complement each other. So a wrought iron railing with intricate design is suitable for a house with a Mediterranean theme. Stainless steel as it is or combined with glass is great for modern homes.

For the front porch, you can choose to use wood if the area is covered. The typical railing that features vertical balusters can match a home with a rustic theme. But while wood can stand on its own, it can also be combined with other materials such as stone and wrought iron.

But don't forget that you need to take into account as well the purpose of the railing which is safety for you and your family. This is the crucial part that should not be ignored. For this reason, you need to install your railing properly by following the right specifications in accordance to your area's building codes. This is to ensure that accidents are avoided in your residence.

The safety aspect should actually be prioritized by homeowners who have small children or old people in their house. These people need to be protected from slips and falls so make sure the railings around your home such as in your staircase and balconies are safely secured.

With the prices of railing materials becoming more affordable today, homeowners have every chance to achieve their dream house. Creativity and safety are what very essential in order to provide the best protection possible to all members of your family as well as guests who may be visiting your home every now and then particularly during special occasions.

What's important is you do a little research first in order to find that perfect design suited for your personal style as well as your home's overall architectural design. You can conveniently browse through numerous websites on the internet or through home improvement as well as architecture magazines. If you aren't sure about your choices, feel free to consult a contractor or a professional designer to help you pick the most suitable design for your home.

An Elegant Addition To Your Home-Wood Railings

Wood railings are a very elegant addition to a home. For an instant update to your home that will add a stylish touch, consider adding wood railings. Wood railings have long been the choice for indoor railings because they have a soft and mellow look for inside the house. Metal railings tend to reflect light and make the interior too right. The softness of wood does not reflect, but rather adds a warm glow that lends an air of tranquility to a home.

Besides their beautiful good looks, there are other advantages to wood railings. Wood railings, when used indoors and not exposed to the elements, are just about maintenance free. If wood railings are properly lacquered when they are installed, a light dusting and polishing from time to time will keep them looking beautiful. Wood is very durable, and heavy wooden railings can last forever in a home. And don't forget the fun of sliding down the wooden railing in your home when you were a kid. Don't you want your kids to enjoy that?

There are many choices of woods for beautiful wood railings. Besides the various styles you can choose for the posts, balusters and top rails, you have a wide variety of woods to choose from. Red or White Oak, Ash, Cedar, Pine, Beech, Poplar, Mahogany, Walnut, Maple, Cherry and Teak are all availalble and each has its own look to add to the beauty of your home. You can even have the posts and balusters in one material and the top rail, the most visible feature in another material.

Today's manufacturers use computer systems to design whatever kind of railing system you like, so you can choose a design or make your own, and the posts, balusters and toprail of your dreams is at your fingertips.

How do you take care of you new wood railings? Wood railings are very easy to take care of. As long as there is no exposure to moisture, you just have to dust and polish. Exposure to moisture means that woodworms and termites can infest and eat away t the wood. If your wood rails may be exposed, you will have to treat them with a chemical to prevent this, or if they are outdoors, you may have to paint them to protect them. Otherwise, just dust weekly and do a heavy wax polishing once a year to keep your wood railing glowing.

How to Choose the Proper Pattern For Your Deck Rail

Determine the need for the deck:

Every garden is different from another and has different characteristics. That's the reason that every garden will have is own type of railing. It is not a simple task reaching a decision on the pattern required for your deck rail. Even before you start with the designs of the deck as well as the railings, it is a better idea to jot everything down on paper. The purpose of the deck, its use and what all would be allowed to be done on the deck etc. All this needs to be considered first. Material required for making the deck, the style and some other issues need to be looked into before you actually start the deck railing work. Materials like iron and wood can be used to make the railings.

Even the smallest detail needs to be checked properly:

In the earlier years railings of decks hardly came in any kind of a style. Extremely simple railings existed, which had balusters which be nailed at a distance between the stakes. To place the deck you don't really need a big garden, because most of the modern day designs of decks are quite impressive to look at. All you need to have is a good design for the deck and in this way even the simplest deck can look quite spectacular.

Hurrying up with the work will not help as making the deck and the railing does require some time if it is to be done properly. For improving its appearance you have to consider even the smallest of all details. Stairs of the deck is one of the most important aspects of a deck. Saving money may not allow you to make an impressive deck.

The main purpose of having railings on decks is to prevent a person from falling. It is essential hence to make strong railings so that a person on the deck does not injure himself. Of paramount importance is your safety, and then comes the appearance and pattern of the railings. Set aside the right budget, so that fixing up deck railings becomes affordable for you.

Installing Deck Porch Railings

Getting the Right Deck Porch Railings

Deck porch railings come in many styles. Unlike years ago, when we could use any style we wanted, today parents need to be careful of what types they use for safety reasons. Deck balusters or deck porch railings need to be no more than 4" apart, the average size of an infant's head.

Deck balusters are the vertical pieces of decking that are situated at regular intervals between the posts you have in your deck railing. The reason for the maximum distance is for safely reason so small children will not fall from the deck. Children love trying to maneuver between small spaces, so the measurements must be of such that they do not pose a threat to their safety. Whereas years ago deck railings were all similar and very simple, today they come in a variety of colors and materials.

New Look in Balusters

The old time balusters were wood pickets or boards that were situated in a straight line. As beautiful as wood can be, it had a tendency to splinter over time as well as needing maintenance periodically. Painting was also required from time to time, which tended to be difficult. Although you can still purchase wood balusters, many people prefer these; they can now be purchased with many other materials. Many of these new materials will give you the old style classic look that's become so popular today. Many people don't like change, but consider checking out some of these new styles of balusters, which now require less maintenance.

Different Styles of Balusters

The traditional balusters are now available in powder-coated aluminum and come in either square or round shapes. They are easy to install, requiring only screws that cot into the railing. Color coordinated screws make it almost impossible to see them. With these new aluminum balusters, you'll no longer have to spend time sanding or painting to keep them looking fresh and new.

Aluminum balusters are becoming very popular when used with deck porch railings. Their appearance is very similar to forged wrought iron, but cost a lot less then balusters made of real wrought iron. The two most popular colors they are available in, bronze and black, go with almost anything. These colors go with the very popular wood railings, but there are other colors available as well. Some of the designs and styles these come in include colonial, baroque, arc, etc. Installing them is very easy with the screw connectors. Stainless steel is another easy to maintain material for balusters and require little or no painting or maintenance.

Another decorative material, glass, is very popular. Glass balusters are made of transparent Perspex or thick safety glass. Their stainless steel screw kit that accompanies the glass balusters make them very easy to install. Many people that don't have rambunctious young children choose glass balusters.

As you can see, no longer will your deck include boring and drab balusters or deck porch railings. With the many different styles and colors available, your deck can become a real showcase of beauty and comfort.

Garden Composting Tips- The Art of Composting

Even a composting neophyte can create top-notch compost with the right recipe. Akin to cooking, composting is half art, and half science. Awareness of these basic factors will help you getting started.

Just like a chef demands high quality ingredients, successful composting needs the best ingredients too. Good materials for composting include these: grass clippings, leaves, plant stalks, hedge trimmings, old potting soil, twigs, vegetable scraps, coffee filters, and tea bags.

Bad composting materials include: diseased plants, weeds with seed heads, invasive weeds, pet feces, dead animals, bread and grains, meat or fish parts, dairy products, grease, cooking oil, or oily foods.

To prepare compost, you need organic materials, microorganisms, air, water, and a small quantity of nitrogen.

Organic material is what you are trying to decompose (see above for Do's and Don'ts). Microorganisms are tiny forms of plant and animal life, which break down organic material. A small amount of garden soil or manure supplies adequate microorganisms. The air, nitrogen, and water offer an encouraging environment for the microorganisms to produce your compost. You can add enough nitrogen to the compost with small amount of nitrogen fertilizer., which can be purchased at hardware stores or nurseries. Air is the one ingredient which you can't have too much of. Too much nitrogen can kill microbes; too much water causes insufficient air in the pile.

If microorganisms have more surface area to feed off of, the materials will decompose faster. Chopping your organic materials with a machete, or using a shredder or lawnmower to shred materials will help them break down faster.

The compost pile is your oven. Compost piles catch heat created by the activity of millions of microorganisms. The minimum size for hot, fast composting is a 3-foot by 3-foot by 3-foot. But piles wider or taller than 5 feet don't permit enough air to reach the microorganisms at the center.

Your compost pile's microorganisms work their hardest when the materials have about the moistness of a wrung-out sponge and as many air passages. The air in the pile is usually consumed faster than the moisture, so the pile should be turned or mixed up now and then to add more air; this maintains high temperatures and controls odor. Use a pitchfork, rake, or other garden tool can to turn materials with.

How to Build Deck Stairs

Fabricating deck stairs is not difficult to do. Anyone with fundamental building knowledge or a healthy sense of adventure can construct a secure and attractive set without leaning into too many problems. This guide gives information on how to make deck stairs yourself to save on the fee for a contractor.

Preparation for design and construction:

The Total Run is the total horizontal distance covered by the staircase, from the corner of the deck to the edge of the staircase

The Total Rise is the entire vertical length from the surface of the landing to a spot level with the surface of the upper floor

Run is the horizontal length from the leading edge of one tread to the leading edge of the next tread.

Rise is the vertical length from the surface of one tread to the surface of the next tread.

The ratio of the total rise to total run defines the incline of the stairway. This may constantly fall in the range of 30 and 35 degrees. Typical riser height is around 7" with an 11" run (standard lumber stock width)

The width of the staircase may be around 48 to accommodate one person and around 60 for two.

Staircases are constituted of four parts:

1) Stringers - sloped members that support the stairway commonly constructed from 2x10s with no large knots that are made from redwood or cedar, to defend against decay.

2) Treads - horizontal planks that you walk on. When constructing deck steps they are made from identical material as the deck.

3) Risers - vertical boards behind every tread.

4) Railing - built from posts, a cap rail and vertical balusters between each post. 4x4 is the most common post material with a 2x4 handrail.

Planning the deck stairs

Find the entire rise and divide the figure by 7 to find the number of steps you will need. If the result is a fraction approximate to the nearest whole number

Divide the entire rise by the resulting whole number to find the height of each riser.

Building the deck steps

Step one: find the total rise and divide the figure by 7 to find the number of steps you will require. If the result is a fraction approximate to the nearest whole number

Divide the entire rise by the resulting whole number to find the height of each riser

Building the deck stairs:

Required Tools/ Materials

2x10 Stringers
5/4" or 2" Tread Material
Angle Iron
Hex Bolts
8d Galvanized Nails
Hammer
Measuring Tape
Joist Hangers
1x8 Risers
2x6 Pressure-Treated Cleat
Anchor Bolts
16d Galvanized Nails
Baluster Material
Carpenter's Square
Adjustable Wrench

Instruction

Step one:

Notch the stringers for the treads and risers. Secure two stair gauges to a carpenter's square to the specifications of the rise and run you have calculated (for instance, set the square on the stringer so the gauges are flush against the edge and trace the notch on the border of the square).

Step two:

Continue working to the stringer, until you have set out the correct number of notches. Use the carpenter's square to position the top cut on the stringer.

Step three:

Place the stringer on the lower floor by bolting it place with a piece of angling iron.

Step four:

Once the stringer is in place, cut the notches partway employing a circular saw and complete the cuts with the handsaw.

Once you have one stringer completed, put it in position to make sure it is cut correctly, then use it as a guide to lay out your cuts on the other stringers.

Step five:

Measure the distance from the face of the riser to the edge of the notch cut, then tear the treads to breadth so they range 1" to 1-1/8" beyond the edge of the notch. If you're using two boards side by side as treads, rip half the dimension from each plank so both will be the same width. Cut the treads to length and nail them to the stringer with 16d galvanized nails.

The square root of the result yields you the required stringer length; approximate to the nearest standard lumber length, then multiply by the number of stringers you'll need.

Tips and Warnings

Local building codes regulate the width and incline of a staircase, as well as how the assembly is supported and braced, how the landing is built and whether railings are necessary.

Constantly check with local construction agencies to ensure that you have the correct licenses and are in compliance with all codes.

All About Wood Railings

Through this article, we hope to provide you with all the information you need to know about wood railings, which is a necessity when it comes to installing any wood products, but we will focus on railings in this article. We will also provide you with some tips on taking care of wood, so that it may last longer.

A wooden railing happens to be the very first choice of owners and builders alike since its durability, style and elegance simply cannot be compared to any other type of material. Depending on what a railing is made of, you may find that the light, in which some railings reflect, can be pretty annoying. Well, the good news is that wood doesn't have the capability to reflect light the way that steel or other materials do. Furthermore, wood gives off a type of tranquility and serenity whenever it is used, which cannot be obtained from other materials.

Wood Railings: The Advantages

A lot of advantages come with installing wooden railings, particularly when the railings are located indoors. Contrary to what most people believe, maintaining wooden railings is inexpensive. In fact, your wood maintenance activities will not cost you a penny; especially for those that are located indoors. Lacquer coating or a thorough polish application during installation is the only thing needed for maintenance. Wood often plays a major role when it comes to railing construction and can actually last as long as a few decades; sometimes even centuries.

Wood Railings: The Types of Wood

Wooden balusters, newel and stock rails can be produced in Ash, Beech, Burma teak, Cedar, Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, Poplar, Red Oak, Walnut, White Oak or Yellow Pine. A lot of manufacturers can offer you top railing designs that you want or dream of. When achieving the design you require, manufacturers make use of CNC machinery, hand artistry, and CAD systems in order to provide you with appropriate baluster turnings, newel post or rail profile.

Wood Railings: Taking General Care of Them

When it is properly cared for and treated, wood does not need any kind of maintenance. The biggest enemy wood has are the various forms of life which have the capability of thriving and living on wood. Such microscopic creatures are the beginning of each food chain. Because of this, wood should be treated with chemicals in order to stop the overall growth of such micro-organisms. Water should also be kept away from wood railings in order to alleviate the chances of rotting wood. Annual polishing and waxing, as well as regular cleaning, whenever your wood railings start to look dull, would be all that's needed to generally take care of a wooden railings and any articles. If the railings are located outdoors, however, they may need painting in order to maintain a brand new look.

Spiral Staircase - How to Know If a Spiral Stair is Right For You

So you are considering a spiral stair for your project. Great, but before you start, there are a number of things you need to consider to make sure a spiral staircase is right for you. One of the first things you need to consider is whether or not you need to your spiral staircase to meet local building code. Here at Salter Spiral Stair we have stairs that meet all national building codes, but we always recommend checking with your local building inspector to see if there are any additions that your specific city or township has added regarding spirals. Starting a relationship with your local building inspector is always a good idea, even if you are doing just minor modifications or a large new construction project.

This is a brief list of some of the requirements which apply to the BOCA Code, UBC Code, IRC Code, and IFC codes.

Minimum clear walking path of 26 inches. A 5-foot diameter or larger stair will provide this width.
Each tread will have a minimum of 7 1/2 inch tread depth at 12 inches from the narrow edge.
All treads will be identical.
The tread rise shall not be more than 9 1/2 inches high.
Minimum headroom of 6 foot 6 inches shall be provided, measuring plumb from the edge of the platform down to the tread below.
Landing width shall not be less than the required width of the stairway. Minimum spiral stair tread width is 26 inches.
Stair balusters shall be spaced so a 4-inch object cannot pass between.
On our website we have a visual representation of national building codes for all Salter stairs. On the other hand if you do not need to meet any building code requirements, then there are numerous options in terms of the diameter of the stair and other options which are not required, again Salter has a number of different spiral stair packages to fit your needs.

After code requirements are settled you then need to think of the budget for this stair and which options as well as materials you would like. What diameter (minimum diameter is 5' for code compliancy), options like wooden upgrades or powder coating, going through a floor or off a loft, enclosure railing for the top of the stair, and the list goes on. Additionally you need to consider a different set of options for exterior projects. I recommend considering powder coated aluminum for durability and beauty, but another great option is galvanized steel. Then you need to consider non-slip diamond plate treads or perhaps the same material as your deck so it matches.

Install a Conservatory and You Need Never Leave Your Home

Everything nowadays is so expensive. Buying a home, buying a car, going into town for a drink, shopping, the list goes on and on. That is why an increasingly amount of people are staying at home at a weekend rather than going out enjoying themselves. But staying in is the new going out and what better way to enjoy the luxuries of home than by inviting friends round for drinks in a brand new conservatory.

Staying at home need not be a boring occasion. Your living room may become particularly cramped when you have a big group of people around, so why not extend the space for guests by letting them catch up on the latest gossip in your conservatory. Because conservatories in Warrington are comprised of uPVC and double glazing it means that you do not need to worry about the room being too cold during the winter. They are specially designed so that they adjust themselves to the outside temperature.

A conservatory does not just have to be reduced as a location for drinks. You could install a TV in there along with furniture such as a sofa or dining table. The opportunities really are endless and do not be surprised if you end up spending more time in your conservatory than the rest of your home.

If you live in an awkward shaped home or one that is lacking space out the back, do not panic as there are a number of different conservatories to choose from including Victorian, Edwardian and Lean-To varieties. You are bound to find a design which will slot in easily and blend in with the rest of your home.

Double glazing in Preston has proved to be a great insulator of heat in conservatories, so why not also look into doors in Lancashire as another way of keeping your home warm and secure.
